Pilot training programs and courses
Type Rating Programs and Aviation Certificate Courses
Our L3Harris Flight Academy in Florida offers several self-paced Type Rating programs, aviation certificate courses and recurrent training for both Part 141 or Part 61 training.

Courses and certificates
Pilots will be required to obtain a Type Rating and/or certificate in addition to their pilot license. A pilot license gives an individual permission to fly an aircraft (based on the training they have completed), whilst a pilot rating is an ‘add on’ which gives individuals specific permissions such as the type of plane you can fly (single-engine or multi-engine) or the type of weather conditions you can fly in.
Whether cadets opt for Part 61 or Part 141 training, both require students to meet the same standard of performance which evidences that an individual is duly authorized to exercise piloting privileges and is regulated by the FAA.
- Part 141 pilot training is a structured training method, based on a Training Course Outline (TCO). Part 141 training typically takes less time to complete than Part 61 training, due to the rigidity of the scheduling set in the TCO. Applicants of our stand-alone Part 141 training can apply for a Stratus Financial, Meritize or Sallie Mae flight school student loan to fund their training
- Part 61 pilot training is what is commonly referred to as part-time training and provides a more flexible training environment. These courses are pay-as-you-go and provide more freedom to train on your schedule.

Instrument Rating information
Type Rating Programs and Aviation Certificate Courses
Instrument Rating
Instrument Rating offers the necessary pilot ratings to fly under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). These rules were established by the FAA to govern flying under conditions that make it unsafe to just use visual reference. Arguably, it is one of the most valuable pilot ratings you can add to your pilot certificate.
New qualified private pilots or experienced pilots looking for commercial pilot recurrent training may want to refresh or build on their skills when it comes to flying in these difficult conditions.
The several reasons for obtaining your instrument rating:
- Safety - IR ensures you can fly in unexpected, poor weather conditions safely.
- Become a Flight Instructor
- Become a commercial airline pilot
It will take approximately 10 weeks to obtain your Instrument Rating.

Flight Instructor courses
Becoming a Flight Instructor is an excellent way of gaining flight experience, helping others, and building the necessary flight hours to become a commercial pilot.
Our Flight Instructor courses are designed to provide students with basic aeronautical knowledge for training towards obtaining an FAA Flight Instructor Rating or Certificate.
At L3Harris, our Flight Instructors spend an average of 100 hours flying a month. This means you’ll have your FAA-required 1,500 flight hours in 15 months and you’ll be ready to start your career with a regional airline.
